Q. Who is Mass NAELA?
A. Mass NAELA stands for the Massachusetts chapter of the
National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Mass NAELA is a professional
association of attorneys in Massachusetts concerned with improving
the availability and delivery of legal services to older persons
and their families. Mass NAELA members are committed to this area
of the law and have the qualifications to assist families in dealing
with a range of legal issues which impact older persons.
Q. If I am a member of the national organization,
does that make me a member of the Massachusetts chapter?
A. Unfortunately, not. In order to join the local chapter,
you must be a member of the national chapter. If you join the Massachusetts
chapter, you must pay additional dues to join the local chapter.
Q. How can the Massachusetts chapter help me
develop my elder law practice?
A. Dinner meetings are a great way to network with other
elder law attorneys to discuss marketing ideas related to developing
your practice. In addition, Mass NAELA has a list-serv where you
can ask questions and get responses from other experienced elder
law attorneys. Mass NAELA also has a mentoring program which will
match you with an experienced member who can answer any questions
you may have about your elder law practice.
Q. Do I have to be a member of the Massachusetts
chapter of NAELA to practice elder law in Massachusetts?
A. Absolutely not. However, Mass NAELA is a great way to
develop your expertise in this practice area.
Q. What are my responsibilities as a member?
A. A member's only responsibility is to practice law in
a manner which supports the mission of
Mass NAELA. In other words, advocate on behalf of older clients
and their families and promote public policies that enhance the
lives of older adults.
Q. Are there qualifications to become a member?
A. Other than bar membership and NAELA membership, there
are no qualifications to become a member of the Mass Chapter.
